Bosc pears, characterized by their long, slender necks and cinnamon-brown color, are some of the firmer pear varietals available. This makes them ideal for cooking, baking and poaching, as the flesh retains some of its heft and texture. Their flavor is wonderfully juicy and spicy, with a crisp sweetness on the finish. Bosc pears have been cultivated in the U.S. since the early 19th century, and their season runs from late September to April or May.
