The Nicolau Family has been dairy farming in Stanislaus County since the early 1900’s when Jose Nicolau left the small island of Flores in the Azores to seek a better life. With him he brought a passion for Family, Farming, and Food, as did all Portugese immigrants. Eventually he would establish his dairy farm in the Westport District just outside the town of Modesto, California; in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.
Over a century later Walter Nicolau III, is still committed to the same values which his Great Grandfather brought to this great nation, with Nicolau Farms continuing to focus on our Family, tending to our land and livestock, and handcrafting high quality Artisan Cheese for families, friends, and followers presently and for generations to come…
Schoch Family Farmstead
Monterey County, California
The Schoch Family Farmstead, established in 1944, is of a rare breed: It is one of very few family farmstead dairies in the state of California, it is one of only two dairies in Monterey County, and it has been run by the same family in the same location since 1944. John Schoch is the patriarch at the helm, who with wife Mary and sons Beau, Seth and Ty keep the family dairy tradition alive. GreenLeaf is the sole distributor of Schoch cheeses and is honored to support the Schoch family’s admirable commitment to high quality product, excellent land stewardship and overall best business practices. Straus Family Creamery, founded in 1994, was the natural evolution of the Straus dairy, founded by Bill and Ellen Straus in the 1940s. Long an industry leader in sustainability and innovation in farming and dairy, Straus was able to parlay their commitment to small family farms in California into their status as a widely-recognized standard-bearer of quality and land stewardship. The creamery uses milk from their own dairy, along with supporting seven other organic family dairies in coastal Marin and Sonoma counties. Straus is family-owned and operated, and was the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States.
